Fire test overview

BS EN 13501 is the European standard which provides the reaction to fire classification procedure for all construction products, including products incorporated within building elements.

Products are classified according to harmonized test methods in Euroclasses A1 to F. Within this standard there are three different classifications based on product type; Construction classification, Flooring classification, Linear Pipe classification.

Table 2

All materials classed A2 to D, obtain an additional classification regarding the emission of smoke and production of flaming droplets and / or particles.

Smoke emission during combustion

s1 - quantity / speed of emission absent or weak

s2 - quantity / speed of emission of average intensity

s3 - quantity / speed of emission of high intensity

Production of flaming droplets / particles during combustion

d1 - no dripping

d2 - slow dripping

d3 - high dripping

Flooring classification

To achieve a fire rating, a product must undergo a series of tests to see how the product performs in a fire scenario. The tests in the flooring classification are as follows:

EN ISO 11925-2 – Single Flame Source Test (15 seconds)
Specifies a method of test for determining the ignitability of products by direct small flame impingement under zero impressed irradiance using vertically oriented test specimens.

EN ISO 9239-1 – Radiant Panel Test
Determination of the burning behaviour using a radiant heat source.

EN ISO 1182 – Non-Combustibility
Specifies a method of test for determining the non-combustibility performance, under specified conditions, of homogeneous products and substantial components of non-homogeneous products.

EN ISO 1716 – Heat of Combustion
Specifies a method for the determination of the gross heat of combustion of products at constant volume in a bomb calorimeter.

Gripsure's fire resistant decking

Accoya®

Accoya® wood uses pine modified through a process called acetylation. The process improves the timber’s stability and durability delivering an expected in service life of 60 years.

Gripsure Accoya® can be sent to an external treatment centre to achieve a Euroclass B fire rating under BS EN 13501.
