How Can a Decking Supplier Help You?

A decking company does more than just sell you materials – they help you create the perfect outdoor space. For example, if your garden is often damp, they can suggest materials that resist mould. If you care about the environment, they may recommend sustainable options like bamboo or eco-friendly timber.

Many suppliers, like the team at Gripsure, can also offer installation services or can recommend reliable builders to do the job for you.

A good decking company will also provide warranties, explain how to care for your deck, and be available to answer your questions. Whether you’re building the deck yourself or hiring someone to install it, they’ll make the process easier and stress-free. Gripsure offers a 15-year non-slip performance warranty on select decking products and more, keeping you comfortable in your decking’s longevity.

Types of Decking to Consider

The material you pick will affect how your deck looks, how long it lasts, and how much work it needs to maintain.

Timber Decking

Timber decking is a classic choice because of its natural and timeless look. Hardwoods like teak or oak are solid and last a long time, but they can be more expensive. Softer woods like pine are cheaper but may need more care.

Composite Decking

Composite decking is made from a mix of wood fibres and recycled plastic. It’s strong, long-lasting, and doesn’t need much maintenance. Composite decking is also weather-resistant, which is great for the rainy UK climate. While it may cost more upfront, you’ll save money and time on repairs in the future.

Bamboo Decking

Bamboo is a newer, eco-friendly option. It’s a type of grass that grows very quickly, making it a sustainable choice. Bamboo decking is durable, looks modern, and resists water and pests. It’s a great choice if you want something stylish and environmentally friendly.

A good decking company will help you compare these options and decide what’s best for your space, your budget, and your lifestyle. Gripsure are masters of selecting the right decking materials for you. Take a look at our range or get in touch with us to discuss what’s best for your project.

Why Choose Timber or Bamboo Decking?

Timber and bamboo are two of the most popular materials for decking, and for good reasons.

Benefits of Timber Decking

Timber has a natural beauty that makes it a favourite for gardens and patios. You can paint or stain it to match your style, giving you many design options. Looking for ideas on choosing the right decking design trends? Check out our architect’s guide here.

Hardwoods like oak and mahogany can last for decades if you take care of them. Softwoods like pine are more affordable and treated to resist rotting. A good supplier will make sure the timber they sell comes from sustainable sources, so you don’t harm the environment.

Benefits of Bamboo Decking

Bamboo is a modern option that’s both stylish and sustainable. Even though it’s a type of grass, bamboo is as strong as some hardwoods. It grows quickly, so it’s a great eco-friendly choice. It looks sleek and is perfect for contemporary designs, while resisting moisture and sunlight, which makes it great for the UK’s weather.

When you choose timber or bamboo, you’ll get a decking material that’s both beautiful and long-lasting.

How to Find a Trustworthy Decking Company

Finding the right decking company is key to a successful project. Here’s how to navigate that process:

  1. Start by reading online reviews and looking for companies with good reputations. A trustworthy supplier will offer clear pricing and be honest about costs.
  2. Ask if they provide warranties for their products and services. A long warranty usually means they believe in the quality of what they’re selling.
  3. If you can, visit their showroom or ask for samples so you can see and feel the materials before buying.
  4. Also, look for companies that care about the environment. Many UK decking suppliers now focus on eco-friendly practices, such as using recycled materials or sustainable timber.

Decking for Your Garden: How to Get the Right Fit

Adding decking to your garden is an excellent way to create a stylish and practical outdoor space. Whether you’re entertaining friends, enjoying family time, or carving out a quiet retreat, decking enhances the usability and appeal of your garden area.

At Gripsure, Europe’s largest supplier of non-slip decking, we’re committed to helping you make the right choice. From selecting materials to ensuring durability and safety, this guide will walk you through every step of the process to getting the right decking to suit your space.

Why Include Decking in Your Garden?

There’s a reason why decking has been a mainstay in so many gardens throughout history – providing a sturdy, dry place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, regardless of weather opens up a world of opportunities for you, your family, and guests.

Here are some of the key reasons why you should consider including decking in your garden:

Aesthetic Appeal

Timber and bamboo decking bring a natural warmth to your garden, complementing plants and landscaping.

Functional Space

Decking creates defined areas for lounging, dining, or hosting, adding structure and purpose to your garden. Read more about How to Maximise Space with Multi-Level Decking Here.

Year-Round Usability

Gripsure’s non-slip decking ensures safety in all weather conditions, giving you peace of mind throughout the year. Furthermore, with our industry-leading experience, we ensure that your decking not only looks stunning but also stands the test of time.

Boosts Property Value

A well-designed deck enhances curb appeal and can increase your property’s resale value.

How to Choose Decking for Your Garden

Choosing the right decking involves balancing style, functionality, and sustainability. Here’s what to consider:

Material Matters

Picking the right materials is vital to ensuring your decking matches your aesthetic and functional requirements. Here are a few different materials to choose from:

  • Timber Decking: A classic option, timber decking is celebrated for its natural beauty and longevity. Choose responsibly sourced wood, like Gripsure’s FSC® certified timber, to support sustainable forestry.
  • Bamboo Decking: An eco-friendly alternative, bamboo decking offers strength, durability, and a sleek, contemporary look. Its rapid growth makes it a sustainable superstar.
  • Composite Decking: Although it might lack the authentic charm of timber, it offers low-maintenance and fire safety, while generally providing a cheaper option to fit out your space.

Safety First

Slip-resistant decking and fire rated decking are essential.  Especially in the UK’s rainy climate. non-slip surface provides grip, while fire rated materials protect you from hazards, ensuring your deck is safe for everyone.

Environmental Considerations

Gripsure is for the conscious buyer. Our decking products not only perform beautifully but are designed with sustainability in mind, combining responsible sourcing and long-lasting durability.

Design and Finish

Consider the tone and style of your garden. Light-coloured decking can make small spaces feel larger, while rich, dark tones add warmth and luxury to expansive gardens.

For some inspiration, look at our architect’s guide on the latest trends in decking >

What Timber to Use for Your Decking Frame

The frame is the backbone of your deck, so it’s crucial to choose durable, high-quality timber. Look for pressure-treated softwood or hardwoods resistant to decay and pests. Treated timber ensures long-lasting performance, providing a stable base for your deck while maintaining structural integrity for years to come.

How to Make the Most of Timber Decking

Timber decking is versatile, offering endless possibilities for customisation. Here are some tips to maximise its potential:

  • Regular Maintenance: Keep your deck looking its best with routine cleaning and treatment to protect against weathering.
  • Layer Your Landscape: Use decking to create levels in your garden, adding dimension and interest to the space.
  • Accessorise with Greenery: Complement timber’s natural look with potted plants, climbers, or even a living wall for a stunning, eco-friendly feature.
  • Lighting Matters: Add ambiance with integrated LED lighting, perfect for evening relaxation or alfresco dining.

Case Study: The Lost Gardens of Heligan

An example of decking’s transformative potential can be seen at The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. This 200-acre estate, once lost to time, was restored to its former glory in the 1990s and now stands as one of the UK’s most stunning gardens.

Featuring themed gardens, including a jungle garden and an Italian garden, Heligan’s restoration integrates decking seamlessly into its landscapes, allowing visitors to explore diverse environments safely and comfortably. The estate also champions sustainability with a productive farm and wildlife conservation projects.

The non-slip decking plays a key role in visitors’ experiences, ensuring pathways remain accessible in all weather conditions. Whether wandering through the jungle garden or relaxing by the walled garden, visitors can enjoy the estate’s beauty with complete confidence.

Wooden Decking: A Safe Exterior Space for Any Weather

Have you ever thought about how to make your outdoor space more beautiful and practical all year? With a natural look and a safe, sturdy design, decking can turn any area into the perfect spot for every season.

At Gripsure, we provide quality non-slip decking for customers across the UK, and in this article we’ll explain why our wooden decking is a great choice for your outdoor space. You’ll learn about its natural look, how strong it is, and how to pick the best wood. Plus, there are tips to keep it safe in all kinds of weather and ways to make it look exactly right for you.

Want to learn more? Contact us to see how we can help with your outdoor project.

Why Wooden Decking is a Good Choice

Wooden decking has a timeless look people love. Made from natural material, it gives a warm, cosy feel. You can use it in many places, like gardens at home or big parks, and can paint or stain it to match your style – or leave it natural for a rustic look.

Wooden decking is also flexible. You can choose diverse types of wood, like oak or cedar, which have unique colours and textures. This means you can create a deck that looks just how you want.

Safety is another big reason to choose wooden decking. In places with rain or snow, outdoor surfaces can get slippery. Non-slip decking helps prevent slips and falls, making it great for busy areas where lots of people walk.

What to Look for in Wooden Decking

When trying to find the best decking, it is important to pick high-quality wood that can handle different weather. Hardwoods like oak or cedar are strong and naturally resist damage, which makes them good for outdoor spaces. Another smart choice is treated wood, which has been prepared to stop rot, mould, and bugs from causing damage. This treatment helps the wood last longer, especially in damp or rainy weather.

Look for wood with a nice, even grain and smooth texture, too. Wood with a fine grain looks polished and feels nicer to walk on. Plus, it adds style to outdoor areas and is durable.

Lastly, think about choosing wood that is sustainably sourced. Wood certified by groups like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) comes from forests that are carefully managed to protect the environment. Sustainable wood is not only better for the planet, but it also often comes from suppliers who focus on making strong, long-lasting products.

How to Make Wooden Decking Look Great in Your Space

There are many ways to make wooden decking look special. For example, placing it outside a big window can make the area feel larger, connecting the indoors and outdoors.

You can also create patterns on your decking or add colour. Some people like patterns like herringbone, which makes the decking look more interesting. Adding lights around the deck can also make it look warm and vibrant at night.

How to Care for Wooden Decking

To keep your wooden decking looking great, it’s important to keep it well. Regular cleaning helps protect the wood and keeps it safe to use.

Sweep away leaves and dirt to prevent damage. Then, you can use warm water and mild soap to clean it, which keeps mould and mildew away. After cleaning, check for any cracks or loose boards, and fix them early to prevent bigger issues. Applying a sealant every few years also helps keep the wood strong.

In winter, remove snow and ice to prevent damage. Use a plastic shovel to avoid scratching the wood. These simple steps will help you enjoy your decking for years.

How Decking and Cladding Can Add Value to Your Home

When considering ways to increase the value of your home, most homeowners immediately think of interior renovations. However, outdoor enhancements like decking and cladding are just as powerful in boosting your property’s appeal. Whether you’re planning to sell or simply want to create a more beautiful and functional space, adding decking or cladding can offer substantial returns.

At Gripsure, we’re a leading supplier for quality decking and cladding in the UK, and in this article we’ll explore how these elements not only increase the aesthetic appeal of your home but also contribute to its overall value.

Secure your decking and cladding solution today by getting in touch.

How to Add Value to a House

When it comes to increasing the value of your home, there are several approaches to consider, depending on your budget and goals. Popular options include interior redecoration, rooms renovations, and electrical system reviews and upgrades. However, outdoor enhancements like decking and cladding are often overlooked, even though they can add considerable value.

How Decking Adds Value to a House

Adding a deck can be one of the most cost-effective ways to increase your home’s value while enhancing its overall appeal. Decking adds value to a house by:

Creating More Usable Space

A well-designed deck essentially adds another “room” to your home: an outdoor area perfect for entertaining, dining, or simply relaxing. This extended living space can make your home more attractive to potential buyers who see it as an added lifestyle benefit.

Take inspiration from The Hamblett’s, whose property near the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall makes the most of its outdoor space with an installation of Gripsure non-slip decking in a bright, sunny location

Boosting Curb Appeal

First impressions matter. A beautifully crafted deck, especially when it’s made with high-quality materials like Gripsure’s non-slip decking, instantly elevates the aesthetic of your garden. The clean lines and natural tones of wood or composite decking can seamlessly blend with your home’s architecture and landscape, creating a cohesive look that enhances curb appeal.

For example, we collaborated with The Private Hill to create beautiful outdoor spaces that offer guests a tranquil, secluded retreat with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Increasing Safety

Untreated outdoor decks can pose safety risks, but with Gripsure’s industry-leading non-slip decking, safety is assured. Backed by a 15-year performance warranty, our decking remains reliably slip-resistant, providing peace of mind for families with children and anyone prioritising safety. This makes your property more desirable to cautious buyers and can be a real selling point.

Offering Durability and Low Maintenance

High-quality decking is designed to be durable and low maintenance. Buyers appreciate outdoor features that won’t require constant upkeep, making non-slip decking a practical investment.

How Cladding Adds Value to a House

We previously talked about how external cladding can enhance a commercial building, but it is also an effective way to enhance both the look and value of your home. By covering the exterior with high-performance materials, you can enjoy a range of benefits such as:

Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal

The exterior of your home creates its first impression, so it’s important to curate it meticulously. Modern cladding materials can drastically enhance your property’s visual appeal and achieve your desired aesthetic. Whether you choose natural timber, composite, or other sustainable materials, the right cladding can transform a tired exterior into a sleek, contemporary façade.

Improved Insulation and Energy Efficiency

In addition to its aesthetic benefits, cladding can improve your home’s insulation, reducing heat loss in the winter and keeping your home cooler in the summer. This energy efficiency is a major selling point for eco-conscious buyers, especially when paired with environmentally friendly materials like FSC-certified timber or composite options that align with sustainable building practices.

Better Weather Protection

High-quality cladding, such as the systems available from Gripsure, can shield your home from harsh weather conditions, protecting the underlying structure from water damage, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations. This durability not only enhances the lifespan of your home’s exterior but also reduces the need for future repairs, which can add significant value in the eyes of potential buyers.

Low Maintenance Requirements

Modern cladding systems require minimal maintenance, which is another attractive feature for homeowners and buyers alike. Materials such as composite or treated timber are designed to resist the elements, ensuring that your home’s exterior looks fresh for years to come without constant upkeep.

The Sustainable Choice: Aesthetics Meets Environmental Responsibility

Homeowners today are more conscious than ever of the environmental impact of their choices. Choosing decking or cladding from a trusted supplier like Gripsure, with double ISO Accreditation and a wide range of sustainable options available, can be a major selling point. Using FSC-certified timber and eco-friendly materials not only enhances your home’s appearance but also aligns with growing environmental concerns, making your property more attractive to a conscientious buyer.

Investing in Your Home’s Future with Decking and Cladding from Gripsure

Decking and cladding are more than just aesthetic improvements – they’re investments in your home’s value, functionality, and safety. By choosing high-quality, durable products, like Gripsure’s decking and cladding, you can create beautiful outdoor spaces that not only enhance your daily life but also make your property stand out to potential buyers.

The Complete Guide to Different Types of Garden Deck Styles

Your garden deck is more than just a convenient set of planks. It’s a place to gather, communicate, and enjoy the outdoors. And, it’s an attractive visual feature to achieve the garden you want. Choosing the right type of garden deck style to suit your needs is the key to getting the result that feels right.

At Gripsure, our array of quality timber and bamboo decking is the perfect fit for any decking style. In this article, we’ll offer some insight on popular decking styles in the UK and explain the benefits of various materials available.

To get top-quality non-slip decking for your UK project – contact us today.

Popular Decking Styles in the UK

Decking styles can vary greatly depending on the designer you use, the place you live, and the materials involved. However, they typically fall into a few overarching categories that provide their own distinct look to your garden.

With that said, here are the three most popular decking styles in the UK!

1.   Multi-Level Decking

Multi-level decking incorporates depth into your design, adding layers that create a truly unique appearance. Multi-level decking can be a simple case of an extra ledge to your deck, or an expansive platform connecting multiple levels of your house. Due to their versatility and scale, multi-level decking is the perfect choice for gardens with varying levels, or for large architectural projects.

Learn how to maximise space with multi-level decking >

2.   Wrap-Around Decking

Wrap around decking attaches to multiple sides of your home, effectively hugging the walls and creating a natural, flowing appearance. This can be useful if your house is an irregular shape, or if you have an extension or conservatory that protrudes from it. A wrap around decking usually looks larger than it is, improving perceptions of the garden space around your house.

3.   Flush Ground Level Decking

For a modern, minimalist approach, decking that’s flush to the ground can be a great solution. This blends in perfectly with your garden, looking more like a type of flooring than standard decking – while still having all the same uses and aesthetic value.

The installation process for flush ground level decking will involve a fair bit more excavation than other options. Additionally, it may be harder to maintain due to the close proximity of dirt and the difficulty for run-off irrigation. However, the best installations will account for these factors and provide a solution that’s easy to look after.

Different Types of Decking Materials

There are many different materials that can be used for your decking. Even within these, they can often be broken down into further categories, but the main ones you have to choose from include:

  • Timber
  • Bamboo
  • PVC
  • Composite
  • Recycled plastics

While these are all common materials that can be used for your garden decking, that doesn’t mean they’re all made equally. At Gripsure, we’re exclusive suppliers of bamboo and timber decking – offering sustainable solutions with great quality.

There are also other factors to consider with your decking, such as hardness and grip. Our decking boards are all strong, durable, and available with world class non-slip grip built in, making them a great fit for any scenario.

Bamboo vs Timber

Bamboo and timber are both highly effective materials for decking. They offer a range of looks, from rustic greys to mature deep brown, while having extreme durability and a guarantee of between 15 and 25 years – with an expected lifespan of even longer. The main difference between the two is in their sustainability; while the timber we use is sourced sustainably, it’s hard to beat the metre-a-day growing rate of the MOSO bamboo we use in our boards.

Interested in finding out more? Check out our full blog comparing the two >

Should I Mix Materials?

Mixing materials can be a great way to add extra accenting features to your decking, but it’s important to handle this process carefully – get it wrong, and you can end up with a mismatched design that’s hard to look at.

The main place to consider adding in alternative materials is in the railing. Metal railing can add a sleek, modern finish, while glass panelling can be both attractive and functional – providing a clear view to the scenes on the other side. The latter option is a great addition to balcony decking with a view!

The Latest Trends in Decking: An Architect’s Guide

Decking is more than a practical choice for you – it is a modern design upgrade that transforms your space with style and function. Whether you’re designing a small home garden or a big commercial project, decking can change an ordinary space into something special.

Today’s decking trends are more creative, eco-friendly, and beautiful than ever before. As an architect or designer, staying up to date with these trends helps you build outdoor spaces that look great and meet your clients’ needs, and in this article from Gripsure, we’ll give all the insight you need to get the decking that’s right for you!

Get in touch today to learn how we can help with your decking project!

1.  Eco-Friendly Decking: Using Sustainable Materials

Sustainability is now important in every industry, including architecture and decking. More clients want eco-friendly choices, and architects are using materials that are better for the environment.

Bamboo and timber decking are becoming more popular because they last a long time and have a smaller environmental impact. Timber decking, made from sustainably sourced wood, is easy to maintain, durable, and eco-friendly. Meanwhile, bamboo grows much faster than hardwood trees, making it an even more renewable choice for a tough timber-like result.

2.  Simple Decking Designs: Clean Lines and Open Spaces

Minimalism is a popular trend in modern decking design. Homeowners and business developers want smooth, simple spaces without clutter. This trend focuses on clean lines and making the most of the space available.

Minimalist decking often hides the fasteners to create a flat, uninterrupted surface. Architects are also using larger deck boards for a seamless, wide look. This style is great for small gardens or city spaces where using every bit of space is important.

3.  Lighting and Ambience: Decks That Shine

Lighting in decking can turn a space into a warm and welcoming area. The trend of adding LED lights to decks has become popular because it adds both style and safety. Popular choices include under-deck lights, post lights, and floor lights that are built in. These lights create a gentle glow, perfect for evening events, or can be used to show off the design of the deck.

As an architect, think about how lighting can improve both the look and use of your deck. Modern lighting systems often save energy, and many can be controlled with smartphones or set on timers for automatic adjustments.

4.  Railing Choices: Frameless Glass and Modern Rails

Deck railings are no longer just for safety – they are now a key part of the design. A popular trend is frameless glass balustrades, which provide a clear view, perfect for clients with beautiful landscapes or water views. These glass railings are often combined with stainless steel parts for a sleek, modern style. This not only looks great but also gives a feeling of openness, making small decks feel bigger and more connected to the outdoors.

For a more classic look, modern metal or wood railings can be designed with detailed patterns, allowing architects to add a personal touch. Railings, often seen as only practical, actually play a big role in the overall design and can be customised to fit the client’s taste.

5.  Multi-Level Decking: Maximising Space and Creating Zones

As outdoor spaces become more like parts of the home, multi-level decking is becoming more popular. This design is especially helpful for properties with sloped gardens or for those wanting different zones for various activities.

A multi-level deck lets architects create separate areas for dining, relaxing, or even adding features like a hot tub. Each level can serve a different purpose, making the space more flexible and useful. These decks also give the garden more depth, turning a simple space into one with multiple functions.

When designing a multi-level deck, it’s important to plan how the levels connect. Steps, ramps, or slides can link the areas, and different materials can be used to highlight each zone.

6.  Hot Tub Decks: Luxury at Home

Adding hot tubs to decking is a popular option, especially for homeowners wanting a spa-like experience at home. Designing hot tub decks needs careful planning to ensure the deck can handle the weight and the hot tub is easy to use but not too noticeable. Architects are creating decks with built-in hot tubs, often adding seating or privacy screens around them. The goal is to make the hot tub feel like a natural part of the design, so it fits in smoothly rather than looking like it was added later.

7.  Deck Skirting: The Final Touch

The latest trend is using skirting to both hide the space under the deck and make it look more attractive. Materials like lattice, wood panels, or composite boards can give the deck a clean, finished look.

Skirting also has its practical uses. It can allow air to flow under the deck and help keep pests out, or create hidden storage areas – perfect for keeping outdoor items out of sight. For architects, choosing the right skirting can greatly affect how the deck looks, so it’s important to pick materials and designs that fit the style of the outdoor space.

Timber and Bamboo Decking for High-Traffic Areas

High-traffic areas require flooring that can withstand the volume of people, the weathering of time, and elements which could cause dangerous conditions. Non-slip decking from Gripsure ticks all these boxes, and the choice of timber or bamboo means you can select the right material for your needs.

We’ve been supplying large commercial projects with quality decking for years, helping to improve the value and integrity of high-traffic areas. In this article, we’ll discuss the differences between timber and bamboo decking, highlight the advantages of decking in high-traffic areas, and outline the benefits of accessible design for businesses.

Timber vs bamboo decking: what are the differences?

Sustainability

Timber and bamboo are both sustainable options, but bamboo does end up taking the edge in this regard. Growing up to a metre a day, renewing itself from the same shoot, and providing a net-negative carbon sink throughout its lifespan. Bamboo is by far one of the most sustainable solutions to include in your project.

That’s not to say timber is unsustainable, however. At Gripsure, we always endeavour to supply eco-friendly timber decking, meaning you can get the look you’re after without harming the environment.

Industry standards

Depending on your building, there will be different industry regulations such as fire safety standards to uphold. Timber can be impregnated with various treatments to help it match your needs, while bamboo can be rated at Fire Class B without the need for such chemicals, making both great choices for a variety of commercial settings.

Aesthetic value

Both timber and bamboo are beautiful materials that can go great with any build. However, if you’re looking for variety, timber can offer more choices due to the range of options available. Depending on what you’re after, both options can either be left to weather and mature, or given protection to preserve their initial colouring, though this is more impactful for cladding.

Durability and lifespan

Hard-wearing timber and durable bamboo are both great options for decking. They have an incredibly long lifespan, with many solutions remaining intact (while still providing the required levels of grip) for 30 years or more!

At Gripsure, we offer a 15-year warrantee on our timber decking and a 25-year warrantee on our bamboo decking, so you can be assured it’ll go the mile. Plus, our solutions require minimal maintenance, meaning you won’t have to invest loads of additional resources just to keep it running.

Non-slip decking is the perfect fit for a high-traffic area. It provides safety, meaning people are less at risk of injury or slipping even in icy or wet conditions. It’s low maintenance and durable, meaning the benefits will last for a long time. And, it’s a beautiful feature to include in your project, increasing the visual impact of your space.

For high-traffic areas in particular, all of these benefits are incredibly important as so many people will be accessing the space – meaning you need to provide a quality solution to match.

Where is decking most advantageous?

Decking is a great choice for any high-traffic outdoor space. We have a wide variety of case studies which showcase where you can utilise the benefits of our decking, but some key examples for commercial buildings include:

  • Restaurant decks
  • Bridges
  • Walkways
  • Garden areas
  • Public spaces

What are the benefits of accessible design for businesses?

The 2010 Building Regulations Part M require businesses to make ‘reasonable provisions’ so that people can access their buildings and use the facilities. While the specific steps to do this aren’t detailed, it means that having an accessible design is a requirement by law.

This isn’t the only reason to include accessible design, however. Having a more accessible building also comes with a number of other benefits for your business, such as:

  • Promoting inclusivity. This is a great stance to take alongside other ESG efforts, showing you’re a conscientious business that cares about your customers and the wider public.
  • Access a wider customer base. With more people able to access your space, you can offer your services to more people, generating additional revenue.
  • Increase the functionality of your space. By making it easier to access and get around your area, you will be able to enhance the journey your customers take.
  • Provide a better customer experience. A more accessible space means happier customers, leading to greater returns for you as well!

Key features of an accessible design

There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ for accessible design. Different people have different requirements, so you need a space that is tailored to match! Depending on the conditions and location of your building, here are some different features to include:

  • Ramps and wide walkways
  • Clear access points
  • Gentle gradients
  • Grip for wet weather, icy conditions, wheelchair access
  • Durability so it can withstand traffic without degrading or becoming unfit for use

Luckily, non-slip decking from Gripsure can support all of these features while also providing a bespoke, attractive visual component to your commercial project!

Gripsure at the ERC Conference 2024

Coming on the 19th of June, 2024, at The Shard in London (or online if you prefer!), is this year’s Enterprise Research Centre (ERC) State of Small Business Britain Conference. While this is the 9th time the event is running, it’s the first that Gripsure will be involved in, and we are excited for the opportunities this dynamic event presents!
We are delighted to be representing small businesses across the UK, giving talks and sharing our story for those seeking support on overcoming the challenges of the modern small business environment – showing how we’ve used various means of funding to help us grow and develop over the years.

Find out more about us and our services by getting in touch, or read on to discover more about our journey and the upcoming ERC event!

What’s our story?

Born from a rainy-day conversation in 2005 between founders Mike and Ross, Gripsure has grown from a local Cornish enterprise into a global brand providing quality non-slip decking to people, places, and projects all around the world. Our range of products has grown as well – still with the timber non-slip decking that’s at our heart, but with added options in the form of eco-friendly bamboo decking and even cladding!
This all wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated team, our loyal repeat customers, and our no-nonsense attitude to bringing customers – both new and old – unparalleled service throughout every interaction.

What Does It Mean to Participate in the ERC?

The ERC focuses on growing and supporting small businesses – a goal which runs in parallel with our own story. With such a vast collection of insights, research, dialogue, and perspectives on the situation and needs of small businesses in the UK, it offers a valuable resource for all those looking to realise new business opportunities.

Our participation means we can attend the event, share our thoughts and experiences, and hopefully inspire other small businesses to find a path that’ll help them refine and exceed at their craft.

How Finance Can Support SMEs

SMEs, or small to medium sized enterprises, refer to any organisation with less than 250 employees and a turnover below €50 million (£42.6 million). The UK government released an action plan in May 2023 for how they’d deal with SMEs, mostly relating to the understanding of available resources and interactions with the FCDO. While this action plan is helpful for SMEs, it doesn’t provide them with the financial advice or support they need to truly succeed.
SMEs can find it hard to secure finances, especially when they have a limited track record for sales and a limited amount of capital or tangible assets available at any given moment. However, to grow and build a reputation, finance is needed. As such, many SMEs find themselves in a spiral which is incredibly hard to break free of.

One of the pivotal moments in our personal history was a loan we received from Multify, which enabled us to complete an important project we had with a large distributor customer and pushed us to new heights as a business.

Some methods used by SMEs to finance their operations include:

  • Independent investors or equity funds
  • Increased trade credit with suppliers
  • Loan finance with lenders
  • Asset finance for investment in capital assets
  • Crowdfunding
  • Government grants

The slow and steady process of growing your customer base, expanding on your service offering, and growing your business from there is also a way for SMEs to expand – though it can take longer, and a lot more work, than many of the other finance options.

Effectively, finance is a way to boost your business and achieve its full potential now, rather than in the distant future. In our talk at the ERC, we’ll discuss why we needed our funding, hopefully inspiring others to achieve their vision of their business.

Get Involved with Gripsure and the ERC

For SMEs both old and new, the ERC presents an opportunity to learn, make new connections, and find out ways to finance and grow your business. We’ll be giving our own take on how finance can support your business, and hopefully you’ll find it helpful – we hope to see you there!

Find out more about the event by visiting the ERC website or checking out the event programme. Or, if you want to find out more about the quality decking that got us to where we are, you can visit our products page or contact our team directly!

How to Maximise Space with Multi-Level Decking

When you’ve got a challenging garden space or project area that’s not offering its full potential, multi-level decking offers a solution that’s both functional and aesthetic. By adding layers of elevation, you open up your space to a world of potential.

At Gripsure, we supply non-slip decking to ensure your multi-level deck is safe to use at any time of year. In this article, we’ll discuss what multi-level decks are, how to design one, and how they have changed over the years to become one of the top choices for a modern, contemporary property.

Get in touch today to discuss decking for your next project!

What is a Multi-Level Deck?

A multi-level deck is any decking that has platforms at multiple levels of elevation. While this often differs from a raised deck, they are generally rather similar, although a multi-level deck can have more complications with the building process – and greater potential for application.

Ranging from a thin secondary deck that acts as a step up, to multiple isolated platforms that connect with one another via staircases, multi-level decks have a huge number of possible arrangements. Some of the more common ones include decks that have two or three directly connected platforms, often brought about by necessity due to a property’s design.

And design is one of the key features when it comes to multi-level decking. With so much potential, you can get quite creative with how you implement a multi-level deck into your project.

How to Design a Multi-Level Deck

There are a number of components that go into designing and building a multi-level deck. From the decking boards you use, to the arrangement of the levels, and even the size and shape of each layer, it can be challenging to get the right fit. As experts in the field, here’s some tips and tricks for designing multi-level decking that we’ve picked up over the years.

Creating Stairs

While your deck might seem like the main component of the multi-level installation, stairs often take centre stage. They connect each part of your decking, and bring it to ground, making them one of the most noticeable aspects of your decking.

There are a couple of interesting ways you can apply stairs to your multi-level deck. One is by using thinner platforms of decking, continuing the visual effect but adding the benefits that stairs provide. Another is to use more conventional staircases, but have them twist and turn to your desire. This way, you can create an engaging visual experience that is interconnected for the deck’s users.

Adding stairs to your decking requires considerations for accessibility and safety – you should always ensure they are guarded by barriers and held to the highest non-slip standards, and that there is an alternative route for people to use if they would have issues accessing your multi-level deck via the stairs.

Using Elevation to Your Advantage

There is little with more visual impact than what appears to be a deck that’s suspended in the air. Of course, careful planning and preparation goes into play that ensures your decking is fully stable and secure, but this doesn’t dispel the illusion.

When you provide significant elevation to your multi-level deck, you utilise space in the air that would otherwise go untouched. This also opens up the avenue of having multiple tiers or levels lower down, creating an awesome, unique effect that has boundless potential – a creative way to make the most of limited space.

Adding Non-Slip Features

Non-slip grip is one of the most vital aspects of any decking. When subjected to conditions like rain, ice, or weathering, regular timber or bamboo decking can become quite dangerous. Our non-slip solution prevents that, keeping your decking safe in any condition.

It is a legal requirement to have your decking reach a certain level of grip, and our decking is far above this baseline – keeping compliant and safe throughout its entire 15+ year warrantee, and often far beyond.

Find out how you can make your existing decking non-slip >

Design with the Environment

A crucial part of any design is how it interacts with its surroundings. For decking, this means checking how the deck will align with the curvature of the property and the surrounding environment. You should create logical levels that match with how people will view and interact with the deck, such as using it to connect different layers of a property in a natural fashion.

If you’re thinking about the other kind of environment, we’ve got you covered there as well. Our MOSO bamboo decking offers just as much durability and aesthetic value as our sustainable timber products, but with an even greater emphasis on renewability and carbon reduction.

Ensure User Safety

If your multi-level decking spans a large distance, such as being a raised platform on posts, it could become hazardous for people walking on it. Non-slip grip is one way to combat this, but you will also want to consider having railing around the edges of the deck and down the sides of the stairs.

This is as much a choice for safety as it is for beauty, as the right railing options can add three-dimensionality to your deck that makes it pop against its surroundings.

Many of our raised decking projects have railings attached, such as the rustic wooden railing at the Community Orchard and Learning Centre or the sleek, modern, part-metal railings at the Story Museum. The range of options are practically limitless, and you can create a unique combination to make your project truly stand out from the crowd.

How Multi-Level Deck Designs Have Changed

Advanced engineering and architectural techniques have meant that the possibilities for your multi-level decking are even broader than ever. Here are some of the main ways that multi-level decking has changed over the past few years:

  1. Modernisation. With an emphasis on sleek, ergonomic design, many multi-level decks have become more contemporary through the use of considered angles, colour pallets, and material choices.
  2. Materials. Modern materials like bamboo decking provide a unique effect that weathers over time, creating beautiful, bespoke visuals that are unique to each deck.
  3. Mood lighting. Having multiple layers to your deck can impact other design features as well, such as the way your lighting is cast across the levels.
  4. Connectivity. Different angles, customised staircases, and robust structural supports mean that your multi-level decking can span any space or size requirements, connecting different parts of your project or garden to create a holistic, harmonious outdoor area.
  5. Expertise. Over time, as people have grown accustomed to the way multi-level decking is implemented, there have been more opportunities for creativity. At Gripsure, we have a wealth of expertise working on multi-level decking projects, suppling non-slip decking and advice to achieve the greatest results.

How External Cladding Can Enhance a Commercial Build

Your building’s exterior can be a challenge to get right, but bamboo cladding provides a solution that’s both functional and attractive – find out more.

In architecture and design, every small detail contributes to the creation of structures that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and sustainable. The use of external cladding is one of the most effective ways to achieve this.

At Gripsure, Europe’s leading supplier of non-slip decking and quality cladding, we understand the significance of choosing the right materials to enhance the visual and structural integrity of a building. In this article, we explore how commercial cladding can transform a build, focusing on design options, sustainability, energy and cost efficiency, and the best materials for large projects.

Contact us today to find out how we can help you incorporate beautiful, bespoke cladding into your next project.

Commercial Cladding Designs

When it comes to commercial cladding designs, architects and designers have a variety of options to create distinctive and stunning exteriors.

Depending on the material you choose, you can completely transform the character and ambiance of your space. For example, modern cladding solutions allow for innovative and dynamic façades that can set a building apart. From sleek, minimalist designs using metal panels to the textured, natural look of timber cladding, the possibilities are endless.

Metal cladding, including aluminium and steel, offers a contemporary look with clean lines and a polished finish, ideal for commercial buildings aiming for a modern aesthetic. On the other hand, timber cladding provides a warm and inviting feel, making it perfect for projects where a more natural appearance is desired. Additionally, composite materials, which combine the properties of various elements, can deliver both aesthetic versatility and durability.

An emerging top choice for cladding is bamboo cladding. Able to obtain a fire-class B or even A rating, it is the perfect choice for commercial buildings with stringent regulations around fire safety. Not only that, but it offers a net carbon sink over its lifespan, helping to build towards your sustainability goals.

Benefits of Cladding: Sustainability, Cost and Energy Efficiency

One of the primary benefits of external cladding is its contribution to sustainability and energy efficiency in commercial buildings. High-quality cladding systems can significantly improve a building’s thermal insulation, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. This not only lowers energy consumption but also minimises the building’s carbon footprint, aligning with the growing demand for environmentally friendly construction practices.

Moreover, sustainable cladding materials such as bamboo or sustainable timber can further enhance the eco-friendliness of a project. These materials not only provide excellent durability and weather resistance but also contribute to the conservation of natural resources. Implementing such solutions reflects a commitment to sustainability, a key consideration for the conscious buyer.

Another important benefit of external cladding is cost efficiency. High-quality cladding systems reduce maintenance and repair costs over the building’s lifetime by protecting the structure from harsh weather conditions and environmental damage. Additionally, the improved insulation provided by cladding can lead to significant savings on energy bills. Choosing durable and low-maintenance materials like MOSO Bamboo ensures long-term cost savings, making cladding a financially wise investment for large-scale commercial projects.

Best Cladding Materials for Large Projects

When choosing the right materials for your project, factors such as durability, maintenance, and overall cost-effectiveness must be considered alongside aesthetic preferences. Some of the best cladding materials for large-scale builds include:

Fire-Rated Cladding

Safety is paramount in any commercial build, and fire-rated cladding offers an ideal solution for ensuring fire resistance without compromising on aesthetics. This type of cladding is designed to withstand high temperatures and prevent the spread of fire, providing peace of mind for building owners and occupants.

Fire rated cladding is available in various finishes and styles, making it a versatile choice for modern commercial projects. Some solutions are:

Composite Cladding:

Combining materials like wood fibres and plastic, composite cladding provides superior weather resistance and a variety of design options. It’s particularly suitable for projects requiring both visual appeal and durability.

Stone and Brick Cladding:

For a timeless and classic appearance, stone and brick cladding are unparalleled. These materials provide exceptional durability and a sense of permanence, suitable for prestigious commercial buildings.

Bamboo Cladding:

Reaching fire-class B without chemical impregnation, bamboo offers an eco-friendly way to protect your building against fire. Not only that, but it is incredibly durable, low maintenance, and offers a range of visuals – from silver-grey weathering which evolves with your business, to the original beautiful finish being preserved through the application of oils.

Timber Cladding

Ideal for projects aiming for a natural look, timber cladding is not only aesthetically pleasing but also offers good insulation properties. Treated timber can withstand harsh weather conditions, making it a reliable choice for exterior applications.

Bamboo Cladding

For projects that prioritise sustainability and a natural look, bamboo cladding is an excellent choice. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource, known for its strength and durability. It offers a unique, warm appearance that can enhance the visual appeal of any commercial building. Additionally, bamboo cladding provides excellent resistance to weather conditions and requires minimal maintenance, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.
