Essential student accommodation walkways renewed with Gripsure decking at Penryn Campus

Essential pedestrian walkways serving student accommodation at Penryn Campus are being renewed with Gripsure non-slip timber decking, helping to maintain dependable access across the steeply sloping site.

Shared by Falmouth University and the University of Exeter, the campus features a series of elevated, decked walkways that connect the surrounding ground levels with the entrances to student accommodation blocks. As important everyday access routes, it was essential that the walkways remained functional, dependable and suitable for continued outdoor use.

Maintaining Essential Access

These walkways provide direct access to the entrances of student accommodation blocks, making their ongoing usability an important part of the project. Outdoor access routes are continually exposed to changing weather conditions. When positioned on a sloping site and used regularly by students, staff and visitors, the choice of decking becomes particularly important.

Gripsure decking combines the natural appearance of timber with integrated aggregate inserts designed to provide lasting slip resistance. Unlike surface coatings or temporary treatments, the non-slip inserts form part of the decking board, helping to provide dependable performance throughout the seasons. By replacing the deteriorated boards with Gripsure non-slip decking, the project has helped retain these important pedestrian connections while improving the condition and long-term suitability of the walkways.

A Phased Programme of Improvements

The completed sections represent part of a wider programme of refurbishment across the student accommodation walkways.

The contractor and client are both pleased with the finished result, and further phases are planned to continue the renovation across the remaining walkways.

“The replacement decking has helped retain the use of these essential walkways, providing access to student accommodation. We and the client are happy with the outcome.”

Projects like this demonstrate the importance of looking beyond the decking board in isolation. The access requirements, surrounding landscape, supporting structure, installation method and long-term demands of the site must all be considered when creating an effective outdoor walkway.
