Activity Centre Changing Area
Honister Slate Mine
Honister Slate Mine is a working slate mine in Cumbria, England, located in the Lake District National Park. Visitors can explore underground tunnels, watch craftsmen at work, and enjoy outdoor activities like climbing and zip-lining. It’s a popular tourist destination and an important part of the local community.
Top Lake District activity centre Honister Slate Mine now has a slip-free changing zone, thanks to Gripsure.
Hundreds of daredevils of all ages visit the attraction in Cumbria every year to take part in a range of adventures, including canyoning, climbing and camping.
Gripsure supplied 630 linear metres of its Classic non-slip decking to help create an area just outside the activity centre where participants can change in and out of different kits. This timber anti-slip decking holds the highest safety rating on the market.
When the weather’s tough, climbers often come back wet and muddy and people taking part in the canoeing trips have to change in and out of wetsuits.
The anti-slip timber decking provided the perfect solution to ensure maximum safety at the all-weather site, which is also England’s last working slate mine and home to the iconic Westmorland Green Slate.

We’re really pleased. We’re even thinking about putting some more decking here in the near future because it looks so good. I would certainly recommend Gripsure as a business. They’ve been really great to deal with.”
Staff at the centre, located at the head of Honister Pass in the heart of the Lake District, said they were really pleased with the new decking area, located outside just opposite the reception desk.
It means adventurers can prepare for their trips or de-kit in a place that not only looks great, but is also slip resistant, durable and easy to keep clean. These are all necessary requirements for such a well-used part of the activity centre – and one that is regularly covered in slate dust.
Gripsure decking is crafted from FSC and PEFC certified timber, which means it’s also a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution.
Honister’s activity centre runs regular adventures, including school and educational trips seven days a week, all year round, and is the base for the popular attraction’s famous mine tours. It also boasts a cafe and shop.
More daring visitors can take part in ‘Via Ferrata’, an adventure climbing system that uses a permanently fixed cable for safety and protection up the rock face of the old miners’ route.
